Research cytokines for stem cells

Stem cells are a class of multipotential cells that can self-replicate, self-renew, and differentiate into multiple cell lines.

Stem cells provide a more realistic method of identifying and confirming new drug targets and generating pharmacology and toxicology data earlier, with stronger translation to the clinical setting. In addition, the application of stem cells in drug development creates a new path to personalized medicine, while at the same time reducing, or even replacing, animal testing.

Cytokines like Activin A/INHBA, EGF, OSM, VEGFA, LIF, IL3, and FGF2 play integral roles in stem and progenitor cell research. For instance, Activin A can be used to promote the differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into endoderm. 

OSM has often been used in conjunction with HGF, LIF, EGF, and FGF2 to discriminate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into hepatocyte-like cells.

IL-3 promotes in-vitro migration of MSCs, highlighting its potential to enhance the efficacy of MSCs in regenerative cell therapy. EGF has illustrated the potential to improve the survival of definitive neural stem cells derived from the embryonic brain.

LIF is vital for controlling stem cell pluripotency, while FGF2 has been determined as a main regulator for several stem cell types.
